RAMECHHAP, JULY 29

A shortage of skilled workers has begun to threaten the sustainability of the carpet industry in Ramechhap, with more than 20 operating factories struggling to maintain production due to a lack of trained manpower.

Carpet manufacturers in Sunapati, Doramba Shailung and Khandadevi municipalities said they have been unable to operate at full capacity as the labour shortage continues to affect production.

Industry operators warned the problem has significantly reduced output, raising concerns over the future of one of the district’s key rural employment sectors.

Dhruva Singh Tamang, proprietor of Kalidevi Carpet Industry in Sunapati Rural Municipality, said the factory currently employs around 40 workers and generates annual carpet sales worth more than Rs 3 million. However, production has declined in recent years due to the shortage of skilled workers.

Tamang attributed the problem to the increasing number of young people leaving villages for foreign employment and other occupations, making it difficult for local industries to recruit experienced workers. He said the labour shortage has not only reduced production but also hindered the industry’s expansion plans.

The carpet industry has long served as an important source of employment in rural areas of Ramechhap. Entrepreneurs warn that unless the shortage of skilled manpower is addressed, the long-term sustainability of the sector will face growing challenges.
