Now a 311-Mile Electric Crossover
Honda is officially reviving one of its most historic nameplates for the electric era. On March 5, 2026, the automaker unveiled the all-new Honda Insight EV. While the original 1999 model was a quirky hybrid coupe designed to beat the Prius, the 2026 version has evolved into a sleek, high-tech electric crossover SUV.
This move marks a major shift in Honda’s global strategy, as it leverages its international partnerships to bring advanced electric tech to its home market in Japan.

From Hybrid Hatch to Electric Crossover
The Insight has always been Honda’s “guinea pig” for efficiency. The fourth-generation model abandons the sedan shape of the 2022 model in favor of a “rakish” crossover silhouette. It features a sharp, Civic-inspired nose, flush door handles, and a fastback-style rear end that prioritizes aerodynamics to maximize range.
Performance Specs: The e:N Foundation
The new Insight is built on the e:N Architecture F platform. While it doesn’t aim for “hypercar” speeds, it offers balanced performance for the modern commuter.
- Range: Over 500 km (311 miles) on the WLTC cycle.
- Powertrain: A single front-mounted motor producing 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque.
- Battery: A 68.8 kWh ternary lithium-ion pack sourced from CATL.
- Drive Modes: Includes a unique Sport Mode that uses “Active Sound Control” to simulate acceleration and deceleration effects.
Inside the “Digital Oasis” Cabin
Honda has leaned into a minimalist, button-free interior. Almost all controls, including climate settings, have moved to a massive 12.8-inch central touchscreen.
- Smart Fragrance: It is the first Honda in Japan to feature a built-in aroma diffuser with six selectable scents.
- Intelligent Heat: A new power-efficient heating system automatically detects rear passengers to optimize energy consumption.
- Tech Suite: Features a 9.4-inch digital instrument cluster, a large head-up display, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.
The China-to-Japan Export Strategy
In a historic first, the 2026 Insight is a rebadged version of the Honda e:NS2, which is manufactured in China by the Dongfeng-Honda joint venture. This represents the first time a Japanese automaker is exporting Chinese-built EVs back to its home market. Honda intends to use this model to quickly fill its EV lineup in Japan as it prepares its dedicated “0 Series” platforms for 2027.
Will It Come to North America?
Currently, Honda has confirmed the Insight EV exclusively for the Japanese market, with reservations opening on March 19, 2026.
Due to current trade regulations and high tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles, it is highly unlikely that this specific Insight will reach U.S. or Canadian shores. Instead, North American buyers will likely see the Honda 0 Series—a separate line of EVs built in Ohio—starting later this year.
“The Insight has always provided a ‘look ahead’ at the future of mobility. By reviving the name for our newest EV, we are signaling our commitment to the electric transition.” — Honda Global Press Release, March 2026.
