Monsoon reaches every corner of Nepal, bringing heavy rain risk – The Himalayan Times – Nepal’s No.1 English Daily Newspaper
KATHMANDU, JULY 1
Nepal is now fully under the influence of the southwest monsoon, with the weather office forecasting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain across several hill districts as the rainy season intensifies.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), the monsoon reached the remaining western parts of the country on Tuesday, extending to the western sections of Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces. The system had entered eastern Nepal on June 22 and progressively advanced westward before covering the entire country on June 30.
The department said this year’s monsoon took eight days to spread nationwide after its onset, one day longer than last year, when it covered the country in seven days.
With the monsoon now affecting the entire country, the DHM has forecast mostly cloudy conditions nationwide on Wednesday.
Moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at several places in the hilly and Himalayan regions, while parts of the Tarai in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces are also expected to receive moderate rainfall. One or two places in Madhesh Province may also witness moderate showers with thunderstorms.
The weather office has warned of heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly districts of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces during the day.
Similar weather conditions are expected to persist overnight, with light rain or snowfall possible in parts of the Himalayan region and moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms forecast for several hilly and Tarai areas. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations in the hill regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.
The department has urged the public to follow regular weather updates as monsoon activity intensifies across the country.
