Google Maps Adds Tesla Supercharger Live Status
The electric vehicle (EV) road trip just got a whole lot less stressful. Google Maps has rolled out a major update, now displaying the real-time availability of Tesla Superchargers directly within the app. This simple yet powerful feature is a huge leap forward, simplifying the charging experience for all EV drivers.
End the Guessing Game
For years, planning an EV road trip meant jumping between apps. Drivers had to use Google Maps for navigation and then switch to the official Tesla app or crowd-sourced tools like PlugShare to check if a charger was open. This constant switching was frustrating and often inaccurate, making charging stops a total guessing game.
Now, that’s over. You can see the live Supercharger status—highlighted clearly in green—right in the “Overview” section of Google Maps. This streamlined process saves valuable time and helps you avoid the dreaded scenario of arriving at a packed charging station.

Why This Matters for Your EV
The official Tesla app offers accurate, real-time data, but it sometimes lags or fails, particularly on Android devices. Third-party apps rely on less dependable community data. Google Maps, however, opens instantly and operates flawlessly, especially when you need it most on open roads. It has instantly become the single most reliable tool for checking Supercharger status.
This move is incredibly positive, showing both Google and Tesla are actively working to improve the ecosystem. It’s a huge benefit not only for Tesla owners but also for the growing number of non-Tesla EVs adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS).
What’s Next for the Charging Experience?
While this update is a massive step forward, the development potential is exciting. Max De Zegher, Tesla’s director of charging, has suggested that future updates could include: real-time wait times, forecasted availability as well as dynamic re-routing based on charging forecasts.
There is also room for improvement regarding pricing information and greater accuracy on specific connector details (CCS or NACS) at a site. But for now, the ability to see live Supercharger availability in Google Maps is a positive development we can all celebrate. The future of seamless EV travel looks brighter than ever!
