KATHMANDU, JUNE 14
The French Embassy in Nepal has celebrated the international success of Nepali film Elephants in the Fog, which won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
French Ambassador to Nepal Virginie Corteval hosted a reception at her residence on Thursday in honour of the film and its production team.
The film, directed by Abinash Bikram Shah, is a co-production involving Nepal, France, Germany, Brazil and Norway. It also received support from Institut Français through its La Fabrique programme.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Corteval said the recognition at Cannes reflected Nepal’s growing creative potential and the strength of its storytelling tradition.
Director Shah expressed gratitude to the film’s supporters and international funding partners, stating that such support helps preserve and amplify local stories that might otherwise struggle to reach global audiences.
The reception was attended by members of the film crew, Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol, media representatives and figures from Nepal’s film industry.
The award marks a significant achievement for Nepali cinema, bringing international recognition to a film centred on themes of resilience, survival and marginalized communities.
