Egg prices have increased across the country following a decline in production triggered by intense summer heat.

The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association has fixed the farm-gate price of large eggs at Rs 515 per crate (30 eggs) and medium eggs at Rs 485 per crate, up from Rs 485 and Rs 435 respectively. The consumer price has been set at Rs 25 per egg.

Association Chairperson Binod Pokharel said the price hike was driven by reduced output due to extreme heat, coupled with rising demand. Demand has surged in recent days amid increased tourist movement during the recent public holidays.

Farmers have also cited labour shortages, as many workers are leaving the sector, along with disease outbreaks among poultry as key factors affecting supply.

According to the association, the production cost per egg stands at Rs 19.12, yet many farmers are still struggling to cover expenses.

The poultry sector has been facing persistent challenges in recent years, with many farmers exiting the business due to low returns, declining productivity, disease risks and mounting bank loans.
