Author, translator and journalist Birat Anupam has won the Sahitya Post Nonfiction Award 2082 BS for his debut book, Pahilo Aam Nirwachan 2015 (First General Election 1959), which chronicles Nepal’s first democratic parliamentary election.

The award was presented at a ceremony in Kathmandu on Monday, where the book was selected from among 24 nonfiction titles written by first-time authors.

Madan Puraskar-winning author Krishna Dharabasi, senior litterateur Narayan Dhakal and Sahitya Post Editor-in-Chief Ashwini Koirala presented the award to Anupam. The recognition carries a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a certificate and a collection of books.

Released ahead of Nepal’s most recent general elections held on March 5, 2026, the book offers an extensive account of the country’s historic 1959 general election, widely regarded as Nepal’s first democratic electoral exercise.

The publication compiles the election manifestos of all victorious political parties, detailed vote counts of both winning and defeated candidates, records of election disputes, and contemporary coverage from national and international media.

It also preserves first-hand accounts from voters, candidates, polling agents and journalists who witnessed the landmark polls, providing a detailed historical record of a pivotal chapter in Nepal’s democratic journey.
