Bhattarai steps down as Nepal Samajbadi Party chair – The Himalayan Times – Nepal’s No.1 English Daily Newspaper
KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 25
Chairperson of the Nepal Samajbadi Party (Naya Shakti) and former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai announced today that he has resigned from the party leadership.
Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu, Dr. Bhattarai said he decided to step down to pave the way for a new generation of leaders in the current political context.
“Leadership transfer within political parties is essential. I have decided to resign as chairperson to allow the younger generation to assume responsibility. However, I will continue working to build an alternative political force and promote social transformation,” he stated.
He expressed support for the recent Gen-Z movement for good governance, describing it as genuine, but accused certain leaders and external groups of attempting to discredit the movement.
Dr. Bhattarai also urged young people to exert national pressure to hold corrupt political leaders accountable. “Corruption must be investigated and punished, regardless of who is involved,” he said.
He further called for constitutional amendments to introduce a directly elected executive system, warning that the country could face a deeper crisis without reforms in the electoral and governance framework.
The leader encouraged Gen-Z groups to actively participate and compete in the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) elections, scheduled for March 5, 2026, emphasizing that they should claim leadership roles.
