Post-Tihar rush fills hotels and clogs Beni–Jomsom highway
MUSTANG, OCTOBER 25
The Himalayan district of Mustang saw a record tourist influx on Friday, with 6,859 visitors entering in a single day via the Beni–Jomsom road, according to the District Police Office.
Among them, 6,506 were domestic and 353 were foreign tourists, while 2,168 vehicles were recorded heading to the district from Myagdi.
Police said tourist arrivals surged immediately after the Tihar festival as thousands traveled to Muktinath for religious visits and to enjoy Mustang’s mountain scenery.
In the first week of Kartik, a total of 20,509 visitors, including 3,380 foreigners, entered Mustang. Since mid-July, the district has received 118,589 tourists, with 27,464 international arrivals, official data show.
The rush has overwhelmed the region’s capacity, with traffic jams along the Beni–Jomsom highway and hotels from Ghansa to Muktinath running full. According to reports, almost all of the hotels along the route being fully packed.
Authorities have strengthened security and medical preparedness around Muktinath Temple, where crowds of pilgrims have filled the premises since Tihar ended.
