KATHMANDU, JANUARY 7

Strong tremors shook Kathmandu and much of Nepal early this morning, waking residents and sending many rushing into the streets.

The earthquake, which struck at 6:50 AM, registered a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located in Dinggye County, Tibet, China. The powerful tremors revived memories of the devastating 7.6 magnitude Gorkha earthquake of April 25, 2015 (Baisakh 12, 2072 BS).

The impact was particularly strong in eastern hilly districts, including Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Sankhuwasabha, and Bhojpur, with tremors also felt as far as the Tarai region. Solukhumbu, which borders Tibet, experienced significant shaking.

A resident of Salleri, the district headquarters of Solukhumbu, told RSS that despite the quake’s noticeable duration, no immediate damage was reported in the marketplace.

Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the impact, and detailed information is awaited.
