The electric ute segment in Australia has gained major momentum with the arrival of the KGM Musso EV. KGM, formerly known as SsangYong, has launched this long-awaited model with a starting price of about $60,000 before on-road costs. Buyers have welcomed this figure because it is far lower than early industry forecasts. With this launch, KGM aims to attract lifestyle-focused customers and strengthen its position in the growing local EV market.

Three Variants and Strong Battery Specs

KGM is offering three main variants at launch. The flagship Musso EV AWD comes in at $64,000. All versions use an 80.6 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. The rear-wheel-drive model delivers up to 420 km of WLTP range. The heavier all-wheel-drive model offers 380 km.

The ute also supports a braked towing capacity of 1,800 kg and includes Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. Drivers can fast-charge the battery from 20% to 80% in just 31 minutes with a 120 kW connection, which helps reduce downtime for work or travel.

Pricing Strategy Targets Key Rivals

KGM Australia has positioned the Musso EV to compete directly with new plug-in hybrid rivals such as the BYD Shark PHEV, which enters the market at a similar price point. Many expected the electric ute to start closer to $70,000 due to the high pricing of similar models in Europe. By choosing a more aggressive price, KGM aims to break into Australia’s work and lifestyle ute segment, where high-emission vehicles still dominate. The company’s Managing Director says the Musso EV is built for drivers who want practicality, efficiency, and weekend-ready performance.

Warranty, Dealer Availability, and Launch Timeline

KGM is backing the model with a 10-year unlimited-kilometre battery warranty, which should appeal to both commercial and private EV buyers. Selected dealers will receive stock throughout November, and official sales will begin on December 1, 2025. With its affordable pricing and solid specifications, the Musso EV could bring a major shift to Australia’s motoring landscape. Both competitors and customers will be watching its performance closely.
