Hotel cites structural damage; government assures security for resumption of services

KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 25

Hyatt Regency Kathmandu has temporarily suspended all its operations after the hotel sustained structural damage during the protests and arson incidents that occurred on September 8–9 (Bhadra 23–24).

In a notice issued by the hotel’s Human Resources Director, Mohammad Yusuf Yamin, the management stated that the vandalism and fire had rendered the property unfit for operation, making immediate repair and reconstruction necessary.

“Considering the risks involved in maintenance and reconstruction, as well as overall safety concerns, the hotel will remain completely closed until further notice,” the statement read. The notice also instructed all hotel staff not to report to work until another official update or decision is made, following discussions with the hotel’s active trade unions.

Following this, Prime Minister Sushila Karki expressed concern over the closure of the five-star property and the restriction placed on staff entry. Under PM’s directive, Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal met with the Hyatt Regency management on Saturday morning to discuss the issue.

During the meeting, Minister Khanal assured the hotel team that the government is fully committed to providing security guarantees. He urged the management not to lose confidence and to resume services as soon as possible.

“You need not be alarmed,” Minister Khanal said. “Please continue your operations with confidence – the government will ensure full security arrangements and stand by your side.”

According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, the government is scheduled to hold further discussions with the hotel management on Sunday to explore steps needed to reopen the establishment and restore services.
