EV imports surge via Birgunj, cross Rs 4 billion in 10 months – The Himalayan Times – Nepal’s No.1 English Daily Newspaper

Electric vehicle imports through Birgunj customs point have crossed Rs 4.02 billion in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, marking a sharp year-on-year increase.
According to the Birgunj Customs Office, imports of electric vehicles increased by Rs 2.37 billion, or 143.6 percent, compared to the same period last fiscal year.
Customs Information Officer Uday Singh Bista said a total of 15,271 electric vehicles of different categories were imported through the checkpoint during the review period, contributing significantly to revenue growth.
In the same period last fiscal year, 9,042 electric vehicles worth Rs 1.65 billion were imported, generating Rs 814.7 million in revenue.
Imports of electric cars, jeeps and vans in the 51–100 kW category stood at 657 units worth Rs 1.87 billion this fiscal year, yielding Rs 1.19 billion in revenue. In contrast, only six units worth Rs 2.06 million were imported in the same period last year.
Similarly, 8,867 electric motorcycles and scooters worth Rs 1.17 billion were imported this year, generating Rs 385.5 million in revenue, compared to 4,834 units worth Rs 96 million last year, which generated Rs 201.5 million in revenue.
Overall, imports of vehicles and parts-including electric and fuel-powered units-through Birgunj reached Rs 31.31 billion in the 10-month period, Bista said.
This marks a rise of Rs 9.65 billion, or 44.58 percent, compared to the same period last fiscal year.
The office also recorded imports of 628 units of jeeps, cars and vans worth Rs 1.25 billion this year, while revenue collection from such imports stood at Rs 3.17 billion.
In addition, 51,423 units of assembled motorcycles worth Rs 7.32 billion were imported, generating Rs 7.09 billion in revenue. During the same period last year, such imports stood at Rs 5.21 billion.
