The UK government just announced a major win for thousands of electric vehicle (EV) owners! New regulatory reforms are set to make charging an EV at home fairer, easier, and cheaper, especially for renters and those without private driveways. These proactive steps remove long-standing barriers, accelerating the nation’s shift to electric.

Breaking Down Barriers to Home Charging

A core focus of the new plans is tackling the challenge of on-street charging. The government is consulting on eliminating planning permission for installing discreet, cross-pavement charging gullies. This simple yet brilliant reform means no more lengthy applications or costly fees—residents could save up to US$315 and see their charge points installed much faster.

This change is a game-changer because it finally grants a crucial group of drivers access to domestic electricity rates. Charging at home at low off-peak tariffs could make a journey like London to Birmingham cost only around US$3.15, dramatically undercutting expensive public charging infrastructure.

Fairer Access and Stronger Protections

To ensure equitable access, new covered car parks will now face a mandate to include charging point installations. This expands infrastructure right where many renters and leaseholders park their vehicles.

Crucially, the government is collaborating with energy regulator Ofgem to establish stronger protections for tenants. This partnership will actively prevent landlords from overcharging tenants for home charging, ensuring everyone benefits from the cheaper domestic rates.
