KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 24

While most parts of the country were celebrating the Tihar festival, schools in the upper region of Dolpa were busy conducting their annual examinations.

Shey Phoksundo Rural Municipality, located in upper Dolpa, held the final examinations in local schools in line with the district’s academic calendar. Owing to the harsh winter conditions in the highlands, the local government is compelled to complete the annual exams before November 1. Schools within the municipality then announce their winter vacation, according to Pema Wangchhen Gurung, coordinator of the Education Committee in the rural municipality.

The schools were instructed to conduct their final examinations between mid-October and November 1.

The upper region of the district experiences severe cold and heavy snowfall starting from mid-October. “Therefore, the exams were held despite the Tihar festival,” said Nabin Shahi, a teacher at Tashi Sambho Basic School in Shey Phoksundo-7. “We celebrated Tihar with our students this year. All schools conducted the exams as directed by the local government,” he added.

Due to the climatic variations across the district, two separate academic calendars are implemented in Dolpa.
