Festival honors dogs as loyal companions and divine messengers

KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 20

Kukur Tihar, the festival dedicated to dogs, is being observed across the country today, marking the third day of Yamapanchak in this year’s Tihar festival.

Although traditionally celebrated on the second day of Tihar, Kukur Tihar falls on the third day this year due to calendar adjustments, according to the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee.

On this day, dogs, revered as loyal companions and messengers of Yamaraj, the God of Death are worshipped with garlands, tika, and special treats. The festival, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, symbolizes the deep bond between humans and dogs, who are also remembered for their mythical role in accompanying Dharmaraj Yudhisthir to heaven in the epic Mahabharat.
