Rising Star of Gandaki Volleyball – Himal Sunari – The Himalayan Times – Nepal’s No.1 English Daily Newspaper

Volleyball is the most frequently played sport in Nepal, and its most fertile ground is none other than Gandaki Province. Among the popular non-departmental clubs in volleyball, Gandaki’s name always stands out.

Whether in the time of five development regions or under today’s federal structure of seven provinces, Gandaki (formerly the Western Region) has never lagged behind in volleyball. In fact, no volleyball event feels complete without Gandaki’s participation.

The Gandaki team boasts players who are immensely popular among fans, and one of the most prominent names is Himal Sunari.

Born in Nisdi-4, Palpa, Himal is the son of Rewan Singh Sunari and Khagisara Sunari. Though Palpa is his birthplace, Gandaki has become his true sporting home. His volleyball journey began with the Tip Top Help Nepal Club, after which he joined Gandaki’s team.

He started playing at the national level with the 5th NVA Cup and made his debut for Gandaki in the 2nd Tiger Cup Volleyball Tournament in 2078 B.S. Since then, his presence has been constant in almost every major national competition, from the Kavha Club Volleyball Championship, the 9th National Games, the 34th National Volleyball Championship, to the NVA Cup Volleyball. He has also represented Gandaki internationally, competing in the UAE, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.

Why is Himal so popular among fans? The answer lies in his playing skills and humble personality. His hallmark is the quick spike, which excites and energizes spectators. He plays a decisive role whenever his team needs him most. In volleyball-crazy Gandaki, Himal enjoys a massive fan following.

Yet, despite his talent, why has he not been included in the national team? The main reason cited is his relatively short height. However, this does not discourage him. From cities to villages, and from accessible areas to remote regions, Himal continues to play wherever the sport takes him. Having risen from local tournaments to international competitions, the value of the titles and recognition he has earned is immeasurable. He says, “Of course, I dream of wearing the national team’s jersey, but it doesn’t matter. The love and support of the fans mean everything to me.”

For Himal, Gandaki volleyball holds a special place. “Gandaki means everything to me. Volleyball has given me so much; I must give back to it,” he says.

Currently, Himal has been nominated for the NSJF Pulsar Sports Awards in the People’s Choice category. Historically, this category has often been dominated by national women’s volleyball players, but this rising star from Gandaki has now staked his claim.

If he wins, Himal Sunari would become the first male volleyball player to receive this award. He is competing against Wushu’s Vijay Singjali, table tennis player Ivana Thapa Magar, footballer Rekha Paudel, and cricketer Pooja Mahato.

The voting system for the People’s Choice Award consists of 50% votes through the Khalti app, 25% from Facebook likes, and 25% from sports journalists and coaches. The awards ceremony will be held on Bhadra 29 (September 14).
