Nepal and India sign key agreements for new 400 kV cross-border transmission lines

KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 29

Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Kulman Ghising, met with India’s Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the power sector.

The two ministers held strategic talks on advancing regional grid connectivity, enhancing cross-border electricity trade, and promoting clean energy integration between the two neighboring countries. The discussions also reviewed the progress of ongoing hydropower projects in Nepal, according to the press release issued by the Ministry of Power of India.

During the meeting, both sides witnessed the signing of Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreements (JV&SHA) between POWERGRID Corporation of India, a Maharatna public sector enterprise, and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). The agreements pave the way for the development of two major 400 kV cross-border transmission links – the Inaruwa (Nepal)–New Purnea (India) and Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal)–Bareilly (India) lines.

Once completed, these high-capacity transmission corridors are expected to boost electricity exchange, strengthen regional energy security, and support sustainable economic growth in both nations, the release stated.

The meeting underscored the growing momentum in Nepal–India energy cooperation, reaffirming a shared commitment to long-term collaboration in power generation and regional connectivity, it noted.
