Devotees thronged rivers and ponds to mark the final day of the four-day festival honoring the Sun God.
KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 28
The four-day Chhath festival, dedicated to the worship of the Sun God, concluded this morning with devotees offering Argha (holy offerings) to the rising sun across the country.
The festival featured its main rituals on Monday evening when worshippers made offerings to the setting sun, followed by today’s concluding prayers at dawn.
Rivers, ponds, and lakes across Nepal, including those in Kathmandu, were crowded with devotees performing traditional rituals amid hymns and lamps. The festival was celebrated with grandeur in Mithila region districts such as Mahottari, Dhanusha, Siraha, and Saptari, where thousands gathered along riverbanks and ponds.
Chhath, known for its emphasis on purity, discipline, and devotion, symbolizes harmony, truth, and compassion for all living beings. Devotees observe rigorous fasting-often without water-and offer prayers for health, prosperity, and longevity of their families.
The festival also includes worship of ancestral deities and the Goddess Shashti, with offerings of fruits and sweets. According to religious belief, offering Argha to the Sun helps cleanse one of sins and ailments, bringing spiritual and physical well-being.
