Andrew Leonard, an Irish cricket commentator and presenter immensely popular among Nepali cricket fans worldwide, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Nepal for emerging as the unbeaten champions of the T20 World Cup Asia-East Pacific Qualifier in Oman.

Widely admired as one of the most beloved figures in the Nepali cricketing fraternity, Leonard has been honored by the Government of Nepal for his outstanding contributions, dedication, and affection toward Nepalese cricket. Following the conclusion of the event, Leonard spoke briefly to The Himalayan Times.

“Huge achievement for coach Stuart Law and skipper Rohit Paudel men,” Leonard said. “The team delivered in classic Nepali style – full of thrilling, heart-stopping moments in every game. Whether they’re called the ‘Cardiac Kids’ or maybe the ‘Cardiac Kings,’ their performances against UAE, Japan, and particularly Qatar – including one-run and four-run victories – will be remembered for a long time.”

“I’m delighted that the best team won the tournament. They have shown amazing character, great resilience, and skill. Nepal are worthy champions and will undoubtedly be the story to watch when they travel to India and Sri Lanka for the T20 World Cup next year.”

Speaking about Nepali fans, Leonard added, “Look, they are simply some of the most amazing people I have ever met. They are emotional, just like me, and I feel such a strong bond with them. We share the roller coaster of emotions that comes with sports – the highs, the lows, the ups, and the downs. These associate games hold a very special place in my heart.”

“Right now, Nepal are the flag bearers in so many ways, and their fans deserve immense credit. At many points in the tournament, they have truly been the 12th player, and I am certain they will play a huge role in the journey next year. I expect every Nepali game to be a sell-out.”

On the field, Leonard praised Nepal’s performance: “They have been unbelievably impressive fielding side. They are not just the best among associate nations – potentially alongside the Netherlands – but perhaps one of the best fielding sides in world cricket. Their batting still needs work, particularly in the middle order, although the opening pair is settled. Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh have been consistent throughout the tournament, but there have been a few hiccups in the middle order. One area they must address is facing express pace bowling.”

Referring to his personal connection with the country, Leonard said, “This place just feels like home. I have never felt so welcomed anywhere else in the world as I have in Nepal. I couldn’t make it in 2025, and I missed it dearly, but I will be there in a few months’ time.”
